Wall Covering: How to Choose the Best

Every room in your house needs the right wall covering to give it the aesthetic you want for your overall home style. At home improvement stores, you can find a wall covering in everything from printed wall paper to more unique options like bamboo paneling, fabric and even metal or wood. The type you buy and have installed may depend largely on the room in question.

Wallpaper is probably the most commonly known type of wall covering. It comes in fabric, paper and vinyl options with an incredible number of different colors and styles. This wall covering is affixed to the wall with a special type of paste or glue. Also glued to the wall is fabric covering. While this also comes in a myriad of patterns and colors, it is less frequently used because it is more prone to wrinkling and damage. Classic old homes sometimes have silk wallpaper as a very expensive type of wall covering.

Sturdier wall covering options are usually referred to as paneling. This can consist of everything from manufactured wood or fiberboard created to look like different widths of boards or plaster to metal sheeting, three-dimensional acrylic forms or authentic carved wood. Some covering choices are best suited to accent walls or only halfway up the wall with a chair railing or molding around the top.

Each room in your house should have a wall covering that suits its style and size. In most cases, simpler options are used in smaller rooms or on smaller singular walls.
