Glass Shelves: Three Types for the Home

Glass shelves add a touch of modern style and elegance to a home no matter what room you use them in. Glass topped tables and glass decorating items like vases and mirrors have long been used to add shine and glamor to living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms, but shelves are not as often used. There are three main types of glass shelves you might consider including.

Furniture Glass Shelves that Stand Alone

Most glass shelves exist as part of a piece of furniture. These can be crafted from either metal or wood. The bulk of the support is not made of glass and is quite sturdy and secure. The shelves are just sheets of thick glass with their edges smoothed off that sit on brackets inside the furniture.

Metal Supported Wall Glass Shelves

A less bulky option for glass shelves is those that are attached to the wall with metal bars and brackets. The metal supports can be vertically attached to the wall and the shelves can be positioned at various heights with movable supports or the entire thing can be a solid structure.

Infinity or Floating Glass Shelves

Since shelves are transparent, the mysterious look of floating or infinity shelves is ruined a bit by the visible bracket next to the wall or underneath the glass pieces. The only way to truly have floating shelves is to use a strong adhesive. This is usually only achieved in a small corner, such as inside a shower, where the shelves can be glued to both walls.
